One of our last weekends in El Rosario, me and the girls and Lenka’s host brother Gerall went to Masaya to the lookout point in the town of Katarina. If you remember from past posts, it was my second time to go, the first time I went with my host mother Reyna. It looks out over the Laguna de Apollo, a volcanic lake that apparently you can hike down to and swim in. If we had gone prepared we might have tried this, according to other volunteers the hike down is super steep.
After Katarina we took a bus to Masaya to check out the town and go shopping. The artists market was really nice and great place to buy things, but not on our budget. Then we stopped to have some lunch in the park and I couldn’t believe the napkin holder…a mug from the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. Mama, Daddy, Drew: remember that!? You have to wonder how it ended up all the way down here.
Speaking of little pieces of Americana here in Nica, I’ve gotten to see 2 Chris Paul jerseys in Bluefields, an LSU t-shirt on a little boy in Carazo, and believe it or not an East Carolina University Pirates basketball t-shirt! Did you hear that Aunt Pat?!
Next up, pictures from Swearing-in!
